Should AI tools run locally on your device instead of in the cloud?

Trending discussion··4 comments

There's been growing conversation about where artificial intelligence should actually live—on your personal device or somewhere in the cloud. Right now, most people interact with AI through services hosted on remote servers, which means your queries, conversations, and data flow through third-party infrastructure.

But what if the math and thinking happened right on your laptop, phone, or home server instead? Local AI models are becoming more practical as hardware improves and software optimizes. This approach could mean faster responses, better privacy, no internet dependency, and full control over your own intelligence assistant.

Of course, there are trade-offs. Local models might be less powerful than massive cloud versions, require decent hardware, and need more manual setup. There's also the question of whether most people actually want or need this level of technical independence, or if convenience matters more than control.

What's your take—does it matter to you where your AI runs? Are you concerned about cloud-based AI, or do you think the benefits outweigh any privacy concerns? Would you switch to running models locally if it were easier to set up?

I'm genuinely concerned about how much data these cloud AI services collect. Local models feel like the obvious answer, but the setup process is still intimidating for most people.

Honest question: are local models actually good enough yet? I've tried a few and they feel noticeably slower and less capable than ChatGPT. Maybe the tech just isn't there?

Running my own models has saved me money on API costs, but it requires learning a lot of technical stuff. Not something grandma is going to do anytime soon.

I think the real win is having options. Power users should absolutely run local AI, but cloud services are fine for casual use. One-size-fits-all solutions rarely work.
