Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey: IMAX adaptation of Homer's epic—what are your expectations?

Trending discussion··4 comments

Christopher Nolan is bringing Homer's classic epic to the big screen, and apparently we're getting a full-scale IMAX experience when it releases next summer. The Odyssey as a modern blockbuster is an interesting choice—there's something ambitious about adapting one of the oldest stories in Western literature for contemporary audiences.

What's intriguing is that this is supposedly shot using new IMAX film technology, which suggests Nolan is really going for the immersive, large-scale spectacle treatment. Given his track record with complex narratives and ambitious production design, I'm curious how he'll handle the mythological elements and whether the film will lean more toward the adventure and action sequences or try to capture the philosophical depth of the source material.

Have you read Homer's Odyssey, or would this be your first encounter with the story? And do you think adapting ancient myths for modern cinema works better when directors go big with spectacle, or when they focus on character and dialogue? Also, who do you think could pull off playing Odysseus in a way that feels both heroic and human?

The July 2026 release date gives us plenty of time to speculate, so let's hear what you're hoping to see—or what concerns you about this adaptation.

I'm genuinely excited about this. Nolan's visual storytelling could really do justice to the mythic scale of the Odyssey. My only worry is whether audiences will connect with material that old.

Has anyone actually seen the trailer? I'm trying to get a sense of whether they're going for historical realism or something more fantastical with the monsters and gods.

The Odyssey is maybe not the most action-packed myth out there. It's a lot of sailing and suffering. Curious how a modern director keeps that engaging for 3+ hours.

IMAX film technology being new is interesting—hasn't been much advancement there lately. Wonder what specifically they're doing differently for this project.
