What's your take on Olivia Rodrigo's SNL performance and new music direction?

Trending discussion··4 comments

Olivia Rodrigo has been evolving her sound pretty noticeably over the past year or so, and it seems like she's got some fresh material coming. Her live performances have always been a strong point—there's something raw about how she connects with the material on stage that feels genuine.

What I'm curious about is how her newer work is resonating with longtime fans versus newer listeners. She started out with a very specific sound and attitude with her debut, but artists naturally grow and experiment. Sometimes that shift lands perfectly; sometimes it divides the fanbase.

For those who've been following her career closely, what changes are you noticing? Is the evolution feeling natural to you, or does it feel like a departure from what drew you to her music initially? And for newer fans—what got you into her work?

Also, if you've caught any of her live performances recently, how do they compare to earlier shows? There's always something different about watching an artist perform material they're still working through versus songs they've been living with for years.

Her earlier stuff had this anger and specificity that felt really cathartic. I'm wondering if the newer direction is more introspective or if she's just exploring different genres altogether.

I think artists her age need room to experiment without being locked into their debut sound forever. What matters is whether the execution is solid. Her live vocals have always been impressive.

Does anyone else find that her best stuff comes across differently live versus the studio versions? I'm curious if that's intentional on her part.

I loved her first era but I'm genuinely excited to see where she's heading next. Artists who stay the same get boring fast. Growth is part of the journey.
